Article Review #1: Utilizing Technology in Physical Education, Addressing the Obstacles of Integration

Pyle, B., & Esslinger, K. (2013). Utilizing Technology in Physical Education: Addressing the Obstacles of Integration. Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin80(2), 35-39.

Technology and physical education don't often go hand in hand. Most people think of technology as being a sedentary activity while physical education is all about moving. Combining the two elements together can often be tricky but very beneficial if used correctly. One of the biggest challenges when it comes to integrating technology into the P.E classroom is getting support from the administration team. Due to financial issues, administrators often overlook the technological possibilities available to a physical education classroom. There are many ways technology can enhance a P.E classroom such as planning and preparing, classroom management, communication with parents, instruction and assessment. Classroom management is often a difficult task with a group of 40 or more students. Music is a great way to organize and manage behaviors in class. For instance, "Seconds" is a timer app which displays the about of time each student is suppose to be working at each station. It counts down the time, adds music for enjoyment and gives a loud "beep" when students should move to the next station. This now gives the teacher an opportunity to walk around the classroom correcting form and monitoring off-task behaviors rather than standing in one spot, turning the music on and off. Technology can be used for instruction and assessment. The use of a video game console such Wii, pedometers and heart rate monitors are great way to monitor your students activity levels. Teachers can also use technology to help enhance instruction by showing a video, pointing out key points and giving feedback. Students can self and peer assess form and performances by the use of specific apps and cameras. By integrating technology into the classroom, this often gets students excited and disguises exercise for those students who don't love physical education.

I fully agree and support this article. I have used some technology in my P.E classroom and it worked wonderful. Students were very excited and the results were awesome. For example, I use heart rate monitors in my classroom and students can see their heart rate on a TV screen along with their peers and they work so hard to stay in their heart rate zone and be the first one to twenty minutes. Not only do my students get a great workout but I get to save their workout so I can assess each students performance for the day and how hard he or she worked. Technology is growing rapidly with endless opportunities. I think it's important and key to involve technology into the classroom to enhance student learning, instruction and growth.
